Church Street New Haven: 1912 New Haven Digital Collection
New Haven and the problem of change in the American city.

Many of the New Haven Historical Maps are delivered via the Library's ESRI ArcIMS Internet Map Server. The multiple map feature in the Maplicity Map uses Telemorphic's Maplicity Server Plug-in.

There are three versions of the maps available from this server, the HTML, Maplicity and the Java (Java Feature Services) Versions. Additional maps are available on the Historical New Haven Digital Collection Maps page.

The Lizardtech Expressview Plug-in for viewing .sid (SID) files is required for viewing many of the maps on this site.

Note: A dial-up connection is not recommended for users of this site. A high-speed Internet Connection (on-campus network use or a DSL/cable modem connection) will provide optimal performance. Off-campus users will need to use the Proxy Server or VPN.

HTML Version

The HTML map requires no additional software other than a current web browser as outlined below. The Lizardtech Expressview Plug-in or Photoshop plug-in is required to view direct links to historical maps. Set desktop color settings to the highest possible for the clearest pictures.

Hints: Click on the toolbar icons on the left to use them on the map. Click and drag to create a zoom or select box on the screen. Check a layer to turn it on or off. Use the Browser's Refresh button after checking a layer to activate the change.

Browser Requirements:

PC: Internet Explorer or Netscape Versions 4.0 or later, or any Mozilla variant.

Mac OS X: Apple Safari 1.0 or later, Netscape 6.0 or later, any Mozilla variant. Internet Exporer 5.0 for the Mac will not work with ArcIMS and is not supported

Note: Safari is Apple's own new browser for OS X. You can download it at http://www.apple.com/safari.

MacOS 9: ArcIMS will only work on Netscape 4.0 or higher. It will not work on Internet Explorer for the Mac.

Maplicity Version

The Maplicity map enables a user to overlay up to 4 historical maps of New Haven onto a modern-day map. The ImageViewer (blue button) compares two layers by blending or swiping. The QuadViewer (blue button) compares four layers side by side. A detailed how-to about using Maplicity is available here.

The Maplicity Map requires Sun's Java 1.3 Runtime or later. Windows and Linux users will be prompted to download it if not alread y installed. Mac users must have OS X, but require no plug-ins. ArcIMS will ask you to download Jave 1.3 if you do not have it on your computer. Click through the defaults to install.

Important Users of Microsoft Windows must make sure that Sun's Java plug-in is enabled or else Windows will use Microsoft's own Java. Microsoft's implementation of Java will not work with Maplicity.

In the Windows Control Panel, double click on Java Plug-in 1.4.0 (or 1.3.0)
Click on the Enable Java Plug-in Check box as shown here (circled in red):

To download the Java Plug-in manually, please click here and follow the instructions.

Browser Requirements:

PC: Internet Explorer or Netscape Versions 4.0 or later or any Mozilla variant. Sun Java 1.3 or later must be installed

Mac OS X: Apple Safari 1.0 or later, Netscape 6.0 or later, any Mozilla variant. Internet Explorer 5.0 for the Mac will not work with Maplicity and is not supported. No additional Java Plug-in required.

MacOS 9: Maplicity will not work with MacOS 9 because Sun does not have a Java 1.3 plug-in for it.

Java Version

The Java Feature Services map is designed only for Windows. It will not operate on the Mac or on Linux machines. The Maplicity Map requires Sun's Java Virtual Machine as well as ESRI's AE Java excutable. ArcIMS will ask you to download both programs you do not have them on your computer. Click through the defaults to install.

Browser Requirements:

PC: Internet Explorer 4.0 or later only.

Note: The Java Feature Services map will not work on any other platform.
